5th State to Ratify | New York | Indira Cesarine, Artist
For HerFlag 2020’s New York state stripe, I was inspired by the suffragists who paved the way for the 19th Amendment to be ratified, and felt it was important to honor some of the most prominent voices from the State.
The center point of the stipe marks the date of the 19th Amendment was ratified in New York, June 16, 1919, surrounded by the profiles of each historical woman who played a part in this landmark being achieved. I painted 8 portraits in India ink for my stripe inspired by images of these remarkable women, which include: Susan B Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, Matilda Joslyn Gage, Carrie Lane Chapman Catt, Frances E Willard, Mary Talbert, and Amelia Bloomer. This project really resonated with me, as my artwork often depicts historical women and their stories, and it was inspiriting to bring it all together for Her Flag.
