LANSING, Mich. (WILX) -- One woman is traveling through 36 states with her flag on flag day. he stopped at the steps of the Capitol thanks to Michigan Women Forward to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage.
Marilyn Artus is the founder of her flag which is a nationwide collaborative art project to celebrate the anniversary of the 19th amendment.
Her goal is to travel to each state and sew a strip on the flag.
Each strip represents the ratifying states.
"I really wanted to celebrate women's history and women's history, we aren't often we're not in the history books like we need to be there's men everywhere in those history books.
But when a little girl opens up that book, she doesn't see herself so I really want to raise awareness about women's history," said Artus.
Artus plans to travel over the course of 14 months.
The flag will finish in Nashville, Tennessee in August 2020.
Once the flag is finished it will be 18 by 20 feet.
Since it will be too big to hang indoors the goal is to have it hanging outside a building in Washington D.C. During the next presidential election.
