17th State to Ratify | Utah | Jann Haworth, Artist
Love this project. It is this biggest sewing circle in history.
I wanted Utah’s contribution to arise from our community and at the same time reflect the spirit of change and justice that female emancipation has fostered. Then too, I wanted the stripe to speak directly to an individual woman today.
Mary Oliver’s wonderful line from her poem ‘A Summer’s Day’ came back into my thoughts: ‘Tell me, what is it that you plan to do with your one wild and precious life.”
I’ve filled the letters of her words with the ‘Work in Progress Mural’ that is a community mural project by Liberty Blake and myself. At the time of writing, the mural includes portraits of over 300 women who are catalysts for change. The portraits were created by men and women in Utah, at Ted Women Conferences and at Colorado University Denver.
